The Bowline Mug is a solid 304 food-grade stainless steel drinking vessel with a handle machined from solid brass in the shape of a ship’s cleat. The brass cleat is mounted entirely on the exterior and does not contact liquids or the drinking surface, while the uncoated metal adopts the temperature of whatever is poured into it— the warmth of a hot roast or the chill of a cold pour— for a raw tactile connection. Since the brass is uncoated, daily use naturally oxidizes the metal, developing a unique patina that makes each mug distinct over time. The design unites two pillars of nautical endurance: the cleat, the ultimate point of security on a ship, and the bowline knot, the ‘King of Knots’ relied upon by sailors for nearly 400 years for its refusal to slip under load. Crafted one at a time by Oceanus Brass in Boston, the Bowline Mug is built as an heirloom piece rather than a disposable accessory.
